An Iranian University of Alabama doctoral student studying mechanical engineering, Alireza Doroudi, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. Doroudi's visa was reportedly revoked six months after arriving in the U.S., but he was told by the university that he could remain in the country legally as long as he maintained his student status. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Doroudi posed significant national security concerns. In a separate incident, ICE also detained a Tufts University student from Turkey, Rumeysa Ozturk, who was accused of engaging in activities in support of Hamas. The University of Alabama received $143 million in federal grants, while Tufts University received $115.2 million in funds from the National Institutes of Health.
