Glaciers have lost 9,000 billion tons since 1975

The UN and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have raised concerns about the rapid melting of glaciers, emphasizing the need to preserve these water reserves. A recent report from the WMO revealed that five out of the past six years saw the most rapid glacier retreat on record, with the period from 2022 to 2024 experiencing the largest-ever three-year loss of glacier mass. Glaciers, excluding the Greenland and Antarctica ice sheets, have lost over 9,000 billion tons of mass since 1975. The melting of glaciers has contributed to rising sea levels and is threatening the water supply of millions of people who rely on glacier-fed rivers.
