UN envoy calls for resolution in Western Sahara conflict

The UN envoy for the Western Sahara has called on the Security Council to work towards resolving the long-standing conflict in the territory. The envoy emphasized the opportunity in the next three months to de-escalate tensions and create a roadmap for resolution. The Western Sahara is controlled by Morocco but claimed by the pro-independence Polisario Front, supported by Algeria. Recent tensions have emerged following a visit by the French Foreign Minister to Algeria and President Macron's support for Western Sahara autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty. The United Nations has a peacekeeping mission in the territory since 1991.
