The Western Sahara is controlled by Morocco but claimed by the pro-independence Polisario Front, supported by Algeria. Recent tensions have emerged following a visit by the French Foreign Minister to Algeria and President Macron's support for Western Sahara autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty. The United Nations has a peacekeeping mission in the territory since 1991.
