A new book by historian Nathanael Andrade challenges the traditional belief that the Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus, arguing that the blame was shifted to the Jewish authorities by the authors of the Gospels. Andrade bases his account on his knowledge of Roman law and precedent, suggesting that it would be highly unusual for a governor like Pontius Pilate to consider a suspect innocent and still sentence him to crucifixion. The charge of deicide has historically led to discrimination and violence against Jews, and the Consultation on Common Texts recently recommended modifications to the liturgical calendar to dispel this notion. Andrade hopes his book will contribute to the process of repentance and combat religiously motivated hate.
