A federal judge has ruled that a Tufts University student from Turkey who was detained in Louisiana must be transferred back to New England to determine if her detention was illegal. The student, Rumeysa Ozturk, was detained by immigration officials for co-writing an op-ed piece in the student newspaper. Her lawyers have requested her immediate release or to be brought back to Vermont. The judge plans to move expeditiously to a bail hearing and final disposition of the habeas petition.
