Syria's president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, met with Republican member of Congress, Cory Mills of Florida, in Damascus. The meeting comes as Syria's new rulers call for the lifting of sanctions imposed by the U.S. and other Western nations. Mills and another congressman, Marlin Stutzman of Indiana, are on an unofficial visit to Syria, where they toured parts of Damascus and visited the Saydnaya Prison. The Trump administration has yet to officially recognize the current Syrian government and has not lifted harsh sanctions imposed during Assad's rule.
