Inside the high-stakes debate that stopped Israel from attacking Iran

The Jerusalem Post reveals the extent of the debates within Israel's political and security echelons over striking Iran's nuclear facilities. The debates took place after Iran's direct attacks on Israel in April and October 2024. The decision to strike Iran's S-300 missile defense systems and other targets was made in October 2024, reducing Iran's ballistic missile production capacity. However, Israel held back from launching a larger war with Iran during the Biden-Trump transition due to ongoing threats from Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis. Israeli officials believed that progress on these issues and the return of hostages would be endangered if they had launched a larger war with Iran. They also believed that Trump would be open to a full attack on Iran's nuclear sites in 2025. Despite not launching a larger attack, Israeli officials believe they have prevented Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon using covert means and that the air force could still strike if necessary.
