Beersheba residents find tens of thousands of shekels scattered on city street

Banknotes worth tens of thousands of shekels were found scattered around a central street in the southern city of Beersheba on Monday.

It was unclear who the cash belonged to. Police were working to identify the owners and were looking into claims by at least one man that the cash was his.

Detectives first noticed area residents running on the street and collecting bills that they said had gotten away from an elderly person.

“I stopped my car and got out to collect the money with some other people,” one of the residents said, according to the Ynet news site.

Police officers recovered some of the cash from people who collected it.

Dashboard video from the scene showed bills fluttering in the wind and people picking it up off the street and sidewalk.

Photos posted by local media showed stacks of NIS 50 and NIS 200 bills.

The head of a police investigation unit in Beersheba said, “Anyone who knows something about the source of the money is asked to come to the police station or call the hotline.”

The incident took place on Beersheba’s Bantz Carmel Street.
