Prof. Arnon Afek, former director general of the Ministry of Health, was asked in an interview with Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) whether it would be appropriate to order Israelis to wear masks in light of the latest COVID-19 outbreak.
“No – the disease is relatively rare in Israel, except in places where there is an outbreak – schools in Binyamina and Modi’in, where masks are clearly needed,” Afek said.
He added, “The vaccine protects at its best by 95%. Against the Indian variant, the protection drops to 80%. It is important that we make sure that as many people as possible are vaccinated – then the ability of the virus to pass from person to person will weaken and so we can stop the disease.”
