A young man was killed in a motorcycle accident Tuesday night in Jerusalem, immediately after the minute-long Memorial Day siren ended.
Itamar Hillman, 21, crashed his vehicle on the busy Jaffa Street in downtown Jerusalem. A 47-year-old passerby was moderately injured, according to Magen David Adom medics.
The two injured men were found lying on the road. The motorcyclist was unconscious, with no vital signs, MDA said in a statement.
“We immediately started performing resuscitation procedures and evacuated him to the hospital in an intensive care unit,” the medics said.
His death was pronounced shortly after by doctors at Shaare Zedek Medical Center.
Police said they were investigating the cause of the accident.
Israelis paid tribute to the country’s 23,928 fallen soldiers and terror victims starting on Tuesday evening, bowing their heads for a minute of silence as sirens sounded around the country to mark the start of Memorial Day.
The one-minute siren at 8 p.m. was immediately followed by the state ceremony at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
