Man shot dead in southern Bedouin town of Hura; 15-year-old boy lightly hurt

A man was shot dead on Friday evening during a brawl in the Bedouin town of Hura in the south of the country, police said.

A 15-year-old boy was lightly injured in the incident.

The Kan public broadcaster named the fatality as 25-year-old Saleh al-Sayyid, and said the injured teen was his nephew.

The man and teen were apparently shot while in a vehicle on the main street of the town, police said.

The incident came hours after a woman was seriously injured in a shooting in the northern town of Abu Snan.

Police said they detained a man for questioning — according to Hebrew-language media reports, the suspect was the woman’s ex-husband.

Arab cities and towns have seen a surge in violence in recent years, with organized crime seen as the main driver. Arab Israelis blame the police, who they say have failed to crack down on powerful criminal organizations and largely ignore the violence, which includes family feuds, mafia turf wars, and violence against women.

The Abraham Initiative, a group that campaigns against violence in Arab society, said Saturday that 48 Arab citizens have been killed in the country due to violent crime since the start of the year. An additional nine fatalities were East Jerusalemites or Palestinians who were in Israel at the time of their deaths.

According to the organization, nine Arab women have been killed in the community this year.

It noted that 28 of those in this year’s death tally were under the age of 30.

In 2020, 96 Arab Israelis were killed, by far the highest annual toll in recent memory.

More than 90 percent of shootings in Israel last year took place in Arab communities, according to police. Arab Israelis account for around one-fifth of the country’s population.
