Rabbi Elyakim Levanon regrets anti-Arab interviews

The Civil Service Commission’s Disciplinary Court recently imposed a severe reprimand on Samaria Regional Rabbi Elyakim Levanon as part of a plea bargain following a disciplinary action filed against Rabbi Levanon for “insulting and incriminating” remarks he made in two radio interviews, while serving as rabbi of the Samarian community of Elon Moreh.

In an interview with Radio Kol Hai in 2014, Rabbi Levanon called for banning Arab vehicles from leaving Arab cities, following a wave of terrorist attacks. In an interview with Kol Yisrael government radio in 2016, Rabbi Levanon expressed support for a Twitter tweet by Member of Knesset Bezalel Samotrich, in which he supported the separation between Jewish and Arab women in maternity wards, due to the “different mentality.” The court noted Rabbi Levanon’s statement of regret.
