We all have dreams, things we desperately want to do in our lives. Sometimes these are small, and they can be reached quite easily, but other times they seem way off and so far out of reach that we lose hope that we will ever get there.
Suppose you have decided to go into business for yourself. In that case, chances are you are pursuing the life you have always wanted, and you love the potential independence a successful business of your own could give you.
However, having a dream and quite another actually achieving it is one thing, so I want to help you on your way by sharing some of the methods that have enabled me to get to where I am today.
Learn how to focus
As a business owner, you’ll be used to getting distracted and interrupted all day long. The key is to build in time during the day to switch off everything around you and achieve your desired outcomes.
To do this, you will need to have discipline and a massive drive to succeed that is so strong you will make sacrifices, gain clarity of mind and move closer to your goals every day. The first step in this is to establish your purpose and make it so clear and vivid that you never question why you are doing what you are doing.
Once you have figured out your purpose, you will need to develop techniques to help you focus and block out the noise of everyday life. I believe that everyone knows how to achieve success, but they don’t control their mind and end up doing the wrong things that keep them in the same place over time.
One of my favorite ways to train the brain to do the right things is writing a journal every day to establish your ultimate vision of what success looks like on your terms. If you can tell your subconscious daily what you want to achieve, you will work out naturally how to get there.
To do this:
1. Take a cue card every day and split it in half.
2. Write down 10-12 things you want to achieve and read them out loud.
3. Rather than copying and pasting, or doing this online, take the time to visualise what that will look and feel like.
4. Write the date on the card along with a number and try to do this every day.
Each time you forget, restart the numbering system and remind yourself why you are doing it.
Set clear goals
Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it,” which means anything you set your mind to, you can achieve. Your mind will not come up with dreams it doesn’t know you can achieve. A clear vision of the future allows you to work backward and create targets along the way to ensure you are on track.
Traditionally, goals need to be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. But plans don’t need to be achievable or realistic in the usual mindset. Setting massive goals will lead to enormous progress. Go for what you want, not what you think you can achieve.
An ultimate vision creates a drive and commitment to do whatever it takes. When you are fully committed to a goal, you will put everything into achieving the desired result. You’ll take specific action each day that moves you closer to the plan rather than maintaining the status quo. You will move instead of planning, and you will learn along the way. You’ll have faith that you’ll get there – you won’t necessarily have every action planned out ahead of time.
